Malathaat Returns to Winner’s Circle in Gr. I Alabama
The Graveyard of Champions couldn’t get her a second time. Malathaat ran down a strong field and outlasted fellow Stonestreet-bred runner, Clairiere, to win the Gr. I Alabama at Saratoga.
After stumbling at the start, she took the long way around -being almost five paths wide at one point- and fought off all challengers even after being brushed by Army Wife in the stretch. She traveled 41 feet farther than the second place finisher, and two lengths more than Army Wife, who rounded out the trifecta.
In an interview with the Thoroughbred Daily News, her trainer, Todd Pletcher, had this to say about his superstar:
It was key [having a target]…Last time, it was difficult to figure out the right tactics and we kind of got tag teamed, as you’d expect to be in a prohibitive-favorite situation. Today, we drew a better post and we were able to let her find her rhythm and she showed why she’s the best 3-year-old filly in the country.
Denali Sales Success
Malathaat is a Denali Sales graduate who sold for $1,050,000 at Keeneland September to the late Sheikh Hamdan’s Shadwell Stables. She went through the ring as HIP 368 in the first book. The filly is by Curlin and out of the fantastic Stonestreet mare, Dreaming of Julia.
We would like to extend our congratulations to Shadwell Stables on their superstar filly. Malathaat is the very picture of what we mean when we say that Denali Stud sells Saturday Afternoon Horses. We’re honored to represent and sell the best.
